Harsh winters are known for causing damage to roofs and gutters. Now that the season is over and spring is here, it’s important to make sure that your roof and gutters are cleaned out and free of any cracks, leaks, or other issues. If you are unsure where to start assessing, here is a quick checklist to help you.
Remove Any Debris From the Roof and Check for Damage
The first step is to remove any debris or other foreign objects from your roof. It’s possible that tree limbs, leaves, or other objects could have been blown onto your roof from wind over the winter.
When climbing up onto the roof, be careful and make sure you watch your step. If your roof suffered any severe damage, there could be soft spots or loose shingles. Damages to your roof should always be considered serious and fixed as soon as they are noticed so that the problem does not spread any further.
You will also need to clean out your gutters. Flush them out with a water hose. Once you have removed all debris, make sure the water is flowing properly through them and the downspouts. If you notice that they are not working properly, you will need to make sure they are not clogged and replace anything that’s broken. If there are several broken parts, it may be time to replace your gutter system entirely.
Inspect Your Attic for Holes and Chimney for Damage
Check your attic for any leaks, water damage, or mold. If you notice any of these, they will need to be assessed and fixed as soon as possible. You also need to check your chimney for any cracks or leaks. Look inside the chimney for any animals that may have taken up residence during the winter as well.
