Is Your Roof Ready For Spring Showers?

20002160_sThe Groundhog has promised an early spring this year, which means those spring showers are on their way. With this shift in the weather, we probably won’t be seeing much snowfall but, the rain and the melting will be in full swing, which means a lot of water and moisture for your roof to manage.

Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy and, sometimes the damage from a harsh weather season can cause serious problems for your roof’s structural integrity. The best way to avoid a small roof problem from escalating to something major is to have your roof inspected and well-maintained.

Now that we are on the tail-end of the winter months, this is the perfect time to have your roof inspected before the spring showers arrive. Here are a couple of things to be on the lookout for during your roof maintenance appointment:

  • Make sure that the gutters are in good shape and haven’t been clogged, damaged, or disjointed from your roof. The rain gutters are the best way to avoid water from pooling on your roof as they work to divert water away. If your gutters are clogged then, they can’t do their job and the water will overflow onto your roof – especially during the spring season.
  • All shingles should be checked to make sure they are not buckled, ripped, or missing. These are signs that the shingles are coming to the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced. If your roof hasn’t been maintained or is very old, you might need to consider having a new roof installed.
  • Check your attic roof crawl space and check for signs of dark water spots. Also, be looking for areas that are very damp or that are coming apart. This is a sign that you have some water damage, and you will need to have it addressed right away.

Of all of the components of your home, your roof must withstand the weather the most. Regardless if it’s the hot temperatures of the sunshine or the cold temperatures of the winter months, your roof sees it all and must withstand.
